The Teenage Years
Things didn't start to get really cool until I got my first PC with a modem. I was 13 and my family purchased an IBM DOS/Windows 3.1 PC. This machine had a 25Mhz processor, 2 megs of RAM and a 2400bps modem. A friend introduced me to telecommuting to BBS host machines that were in local calling distance. We were playing multi-player text-based games and making friends using the national service, PRODIGY, to trade audio cassettes of live music with. A couple years later the internet / email boom which occurred in California was making its way towards the midwest. The chat room was IRC, and it was now global.

By now I had about 10 years experience in coding applications in BASIC, but I was sure that I would have less limitations to deal with if I knew the language of C. I got myself books on C, but it didn't really pick up until I found a tutor that lived on the other side of town. My school couldn't offer a programming class, so I found myself choosing to spend my study hall hour learning from my C books. One day I approached my guidance counselor and together we created an independent study program where I was allowed to bring in an old 286 machine to school and learn/practice the language with a classmate who was also interested in programming.

Then I met the right people locally and was able to not only buy a new pentium computer from a computer business, but the guy was willing to train me how to assemble it from components. I spent almost every day at this shop building machines and repairing computers from software glitches. I went on to college where most kids were undecided on their major, I was never without a doubt that that computer science was the only realistic option for me.

College was a bit shocking. I had already established an e-commerce website for a local merchant and now was a broke and hungry college student. The internet boom was in full effect and there was a surge of tech job positions open because of the Y2K alarm, so for better or worse I decided to leave college to get my education in the field. I had taken a semester on HTML and Multimedia and decided that web coding was the niche of computing I enjoyed the most. I could create software that was accessible to anyone with an internet connection and a web browser.

Please read on, I'm going to give my best at explaining the art of web development for anyone who has the desire to learn.
